Want to know more about Daniella?

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I'd always loved literature growing up but it was only when I divorced in my mid thirties that I began writing erotica. With the success of fellow English author E.L. James, it gave me the confidence to start self-publishing my own stories.

How long did it take you to write your book?

My Black Master only took about a week to write all three parts. I can write fast when the subject matter excites and inspires me.

What genre is your book? What made you choose to write in that category?

I would classify it as dom/sub interracial erotica, though there is no BDSM in this story. The domination is more psychological. I wanted to write about a black man and a white woman as I know many white women fantasize about it or have experienced it. Believe it or not, this story was largely based on a friend's real experiences, with names changed to protect the not so innocent!

What was your work schedule like when you were writing?

Pretty intense for this story. I tend to write at night, sometimes for several hours at a time. The dark sets my imagination off!

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I think my biggest quirk as an erotica writer is that my main interest is in trying to understand the psychological motivation underlying people's sexual desires and behaviour. I try to get inside their heads and take the reader on a journey. Some erotica writers tend to go straight for the jugular, which is fine too, but I like to set a scene and build up to sexual moments.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

A lot of my stories are based on experiences of my own or of friends. The internet can create some very interesting friendships with people you'd never normally meet, and talking online can lead to some intimate confessions. This can often be my inspiration.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I've written around a hundred stories now, and tend to write trilogies for some reason. Mainly because you can tell more of a story across three parts. I think my favourite to write was Natural Born Sinner as it was again based on a friend's experiences, someone who really is in touch with her sexuality! She told me so many hot things about her sex life that I just had to turn it into a story, with her blessing of course!

Are you currently working on another book? If so, is it part of a series or something different?

Am working on several right now, including the second volume of The Stepson, part two of An Erotica Writer's Confessions and a new story about some very naughty nuns in a convent called Nasty Habits! Coming soon, so to speak!

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Well, I love to read books of all kinds, from the classics to biographies and other non-fiction, I get a lot of inspiration from films and music, I like to socialize and I like to shop! My lingerie collection is the envy of my friends.

What does your family think of your writing?

None of them know and am hoping it stays that way! Unlikely as it seems, an E. L. James level of exposure could make things awkward! My closest friends know and think it's great though!

What was one of the most surprising things you learned about yourself in creating your books?

I've learnt a lot about what turns me on and where my boundaries are. Maybe what surprised me was I'm not shocked or disgusted by themes that some think are off limits. If it's between consenting adults, I don't see an issue. Also, as we are dealing in fiction, I had a big problem with PayPal trying to ban certain themes, when they are fine with taking payment for books that involve murder and torture. Fortunately, writers joined forces and forced PayPal to back down to a certain extent. I always make clear that my stories are for fantasy and self-pleasure and don't condone it as real-life behaviour or encourage that.

Do you have any suggestions to help others become a better writer? If so, what are they?

Just read as much as you can, develop your vocabulary and your own style. Explore your own thoughts on what you want to express or convey, try and come up with a new angle. There are enough hacks out there!

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I'm lucky to get feedback from fans and the response I get inspires me to write more. I encourage them to message me with their views and what they might enjoy reading about.

What do you think makes a good story?

I think a good story sets up tension or conflict within a situation, or inside a character. I find it interesting to write about repression, morality and the difference between lust and love and the grey area in between. I try to give my characters an inner life.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

Not an erotica writer, admittedly! I was much more innocent minded back then. I wanted to be a ballerina but didn't have the discipline. I think I might like to write a story about a ballet school though!

Are you self published or do you have a publisher? If self published, what made you decide to go that route?

As I mentioned previously, I self-publish all my stories. At this point I only deal in electronic formats, not printed books, so a publisher is unnecessary. Big sites like Amazon give me enough exposure, along with great sites like yours!
