Killing Chase
Sometimes second chances can kill you.

From the moment he woke that early March morning, Chase Hampton knew, once he was released from prison later that day, he was never going back. No matter what.

Born into a wealthy but flawed North Carolina shipbuilding family, Chase was somehow immune to the dysfunction. The sky was the limit for the 18-year old football prodigy, until one terrible event changed the course of his life and prison became his new home. Through the highs and lows of his incarceration, there was one person he couldn’t forget, no matter how hard he’d tried: childhood best friend Bailey Masters. For reasons unknown to him, she'd shunned him ever since her mysterious return to Foggy Harbor at the beginning of their sophomore year.

Now, seven years into a twelve-year manslaughter sentence, Chase is given an unusual second chance, one that comes with its own set of rules. Suddenly, he's thrust into a position he's not ready for: the tip of the spear in a quiet war against an American enemy. A war that could cost him his family . . . and his life.

LAUNDRY MAN (A Jack Shepherd crime novel)
Once a high-flying international lawyer, a member of the innermost circles of government power, Jack Shepherd has abandoned the savage politics of Washington for the lethargic backwater of Bangkok, where he is now just an unremarkable professor at an unimportant university in an insignificant city. Or is he?

A secretive Asian bank collapses under dubious circumstances. A former law partner Shepherd thought dead reveals himself as the force behind the disgraced bank and coerces Shepherd into helping him track the hundreds of millions of dollars that disappeared during the collapse. A twisting trail of deceit leads Shepherd from Bangkok to Hong Kong and eventually to an isolated villa on the fabled island of Phuket where he confronts the evil at the heart of a monstrous game of international treachery.

A lawyer among people who laugh at the law, a friend in a land where today's allies are tomorrow's fugitives, Jack Shepherd battles the global tide of corruption, extortion and murder that is fast engulfing the new life he has made for himself in Thailand.

Raveled
What’s a girl to do when her imprisoned brother begs her to delve into their father’s sixteen-year-old murder conviction? How about peel back the lies, upend the fairy tales, and roil the populace of Lavitte—a sweet apple of a town with a wormy, festering core? That’s what Allison Fennimore chooses. Despite her infamous surname and people’s wilted memories, this jaded cynic of a daughter sinks her teeth in and refuses to let go. She can practically taste the bitterness of that long-ago, twisted night when two teenagers died, linked to her father by bad luck and a few strands of rope.

Ignoring the dense local atmosphere where image trumps substance and lies become legend, Allison stirs the pot. The more layers she discards, the more elusive the truth becomes. And when a key source of information turns up dead, the dark edges of resentment coil in around her like a slowly tightening noose. As revelations get ugly, Allison may wish she’d never ventured toward the forbidden fruit of truth.

B&N Link

Detective Inspector Matt Barnes is a cop dedicated to his job at the expense of all else. He and his team are protecting the star witness in the upcoming trial of gangland boss, Frank Santini.

All aspects of Matt’s life are altered forever when Santini hires a contract killer, Gary Noon, to hit the safe house. Only Matt survives the onslaught of an inventive and sadistic killer, but is left seriously wounded.

The subsequent search for Noon is both a personal and professional challenge, during which Matt is aided by Criminal Psychologist Dr. Beth Holder, who is brought in to build a profile on Noon.

The man they seek comes to consider Matt a threat to his continued wellbeing, and determines to eliminate him.

As Matt and Beth’s relationship flourishes, more people die at Noon’s hand, and events conspire to bring the cop and killer ever closer to a deadly showdown.

With an unknown enemy within New Scotland Yard, Santini’s goons hunting for him, and a second imported hitman also on his trail, Matt knows that the odds against him surviving by outmanoeuvring the various factions are at best slim.
Noon is the personification of evil; a psychopath using violence and cruelty to feed his sadistic needs. He considers himself a hunter: his fellow man, and especially Matt Barnes, the prey.

The Hedonist
“Too much of a good thing is a great thing.” That’s the motto of Dr. Shawn Stevens, a college professor whose exploits are an audacious excess of sex, drugs, and wild partying. When Dr. Stevens is hired at a top university, he takes advantage of his white-collar position while others remain skeptical of his debauched ways of living. With the help of the Department Chairman, he builds a powerful clientele looking to indulge their habits.

Take a glimpse inside a story where grandiose proclivities are never held back.

Evil Days
When a boat grounds itself on the sandy beach of the New Jersey coast, the first of many grisly murders are discovered. Six badly decomposed bodies are aboard giving off a strong unidentifiable odor. The residents of Atlantic City are used to murders in the gambling capital of the east coast, but these are especially horrific.
Jeff Hodge is a private investigator retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He spots the vessel after responding to a shrieking woman on the beach. After checking on her condition, he looks inside the small craft and immediately calls the local police. Jack Mercer is the lead detective responding to the scene. A veteran of many years in the homicide division, he had never witnessed bodies in the condition they were found. The stench coming from the boat was so bad he vomited like a rookie.

Dead Money
Leo Denison is tired of scratching out a living. After making off with a quarter million dollars from a local Las Vegas casino, the software engineer is ready to leave the country and start over in style. He's not fully prepared, though, for what happens next when a group of feisty seniors take umbrage at his brazen theft and take matters into their own hands to see justice done. Meanwhile, a struggling musician moves to the big city searching for the meaning to life.

Carl Hiaasen has been quoted as stating that his stories are populated with slightly altered true tales from Florida since truth is indeed stranger than fiction. In that vein, Dead Money is a 17,000-word humorous take on several real-life events that were widely reported on during the wild, free-wheeling, anything goes ’90s decade in Sin City where the author once lived.

As in the story that follows, a casino’s bingo software was discovered as being manipulated. Though in real life the accused died soon after the story broke — his death reported as suicide. Jacob isn’t a specific person, but rather an amalgam of various people who flocked to the desert during this period of time seeking a life do-over. The Bingo Ladies are a product of the author’s overactive imagination — fractured memories of real-life neighborhood mothers working hard to provide their offspring with a better life. Names and dates of this tale have been altered for obvious reasons.

Taking a hard look at current events, it’s oddly amusing how Las Vegas almost twenty years ago now seems like 'the good old days.' Maybe decadence is relative.

Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish (a free short story)
B&N Link
Inspector Zhang loves mysteries, but as a Detective Inspector with the Singapore Police Force he knows that mysteries are few and far between. There are relatively few crimes in the city state and those that are committed are usually solved quickly. But that all changes when Inspector Zhang is called to a top Singapore hotel where a guest has been found murdered in a locked room. The guest made a phone call to room service shortly before he was killed - but CCTV footage shows that nobody entered or left the room. So finally Inspector Zhang has his wish - a mystery to solve. But will it be too much for him?

This is a short story, just under 9000 words, equivalent to about 30 pages. A perfect read if you have an hour to kill.

The Brick Salesman
WARNING….. This book contains violent language.

It was the first real job for Patrick Kelly; ‘in at the deep end’ so to speak. O’Leary Utilities seemed a good place to work and Dermot a great boss. Well perhaps not great but he was supportive enough. Then, out of the blue, a fatal accident....... ‘The wheels came off’ and Patrick’s belief in the organisation fell apart. Patrick started to document every fault, every blemish, corruption. His only mistake was not keeping it to himself.

Now ‘old man’ O’Leary knows how to deal with a traitor, a grass, and when Patrick’s intentions become clear he calls on a ‘trusted friend’ and enforcer to straighten things out.

BUT the enforcer fails to meet O’Leary’s expectations and payment for his services is withheld....... Rule 1, never withhold payment to a hit man who knows where you and your family live.....

So...... My advice to you is this; if you believe in reincarnation, then don’t come back as an O’Leary.

Modern Suburbia - A Suburban Thriller Novel
B&N Link $2.99
Teal County. The populace would say it's a prime community of modern sophistication and wealth, filled with every form of entertaining consumption one could desire. Expenses were not spared in producing this lavish and clean looking suburb, along with creating an effective and expanded judicial and policing system and a wide and over reaching corporate industry.

But not everyone finds Teal County to be so fantastic. A young man by the name of Nathan Grant, who has a bitter love-hate relationship with the County he was raised in, is heading back after a long absence in hopes of finishing one last job, part of which includes transporting a very valuable item. The crudeness of the County officials had ironically been both the inspiration for his plans, and now was an abrupt interruption to them, as his freedom in the County is cut short just as soon as he arrives. From there, the story's woven tapestries begins to unravel, and we find foes of Nathan with a set of their own agendas in mind, as well as friends willing to help. With the aid of his friends, Emily, a highly attractive party going drug user, and Aiden, a capable well to do computer genius, among others, Nathan must prevail through the hurdles made by County authorities that stand in his way as he tries to complete a task for Martin Benson, a sleazy corporate high roller. Little does Benson know, Nathan has a few alternative plans of his own for Benson, and little does Nathan know, he might be getting into more hot water than he bargained for. After it is revealed Benson has ties with Falco Dietrich, a German terrorist, along with a handful of his cohorts, and it would also seem the highly effective FBI team of Agent's Simms and Harris has secretly had an eye on Benson for quite some time, several culminating moments of action and deceptions determine the fates of these characters. All while in the midst of negotiating through the complexities of the modern suburb of Teal County.
But even when cornered, Nathan proves his wide knowledge of the town he grew up in can give him a tricky advantage, and that he may have more than one motive for why he chose to target Benson in his plans
