If a gym bag of cash fell into your hands, what would you do to keep it?

A simple man with a refined palate, maverick New Orleans lawyer Tubby Dubonnet has a penchant for fishing, Old Fashioneds, off-track betting, and fighting evil while passing a good time.

His clients are all renegades from the asylum (aka Orleans Parish), including a transvestite entertainer, a buxom deadbeat blonde, a doctor who refers his own patients to a malpractice lawyer, and a Mardi Gras reveler who drives a float shaped like a giant crawfish pot. He also has his hands full with an ex-wife and three teenage daughters, who are experts in the art of wrapping Tubby around their little fingers. And somehow, between work and family, Tubby finds time to sample the highs and lows of idiosyncratic Crescent City cuisine, from trout meuniere amandine and French roast coffee with chicory to shrimp po-boys and homemade pecan pralines.

Tubby's new client is Darryl Alvarez, the manager of a local nightclub who's been caught unloading marijuana from a shrimp boat. At their first meeting, Darryl entrusts Tubby with an ordinary-looking blue gym bag. But after Darryl's unfortunate demise, Tubby realizes he must tighten his grasp on the gym bag -- and its million-dollar contents.

Tubby can’t just give up the cash. But if he gets caught, he’ll be in jail. And if the wrong people catch him, he’ll wish he was.

FLINDER'S FIELD (a murder mystery and psychological thriller) - Amazon

In November 1974, a young woman called Sylvia Tredwin goes missing. Nobody has the faintest idea where she’s gone. She was wearing only a light skirt and T-shirt, didn’t take anything with her, no suitcase, nothing. Simply went out one dark evening and never returned.

Some say she went off with another man, because there’d already been talk in the small Somerset village of Petheram that she’s that type of woman – attractive, flirty with it, dressed too provocatively. But her husband, Bruce Tredwin, doesn’t believe a word of the callous whisperings of the locals as they gossip about his outsider wife. So he never gives up searching for her. A fortnight later on a stormy winter’s night he finds her. She’s naked in a place called Flinder’s Field, wandering aimlessly, badly bruised and in total shock. But what she says to him will astound everyone.

She says she’s been abducted by aliens, and she was never to be the same again, with tragic consequences…

Forty years later and George Lee is coming back to Petheram, the village of his birth. His estranged father has died and there are things his mother would like him to sort out. George hates the village, couldn’t wait to get out and make a life for himself as a writer of cheap and gory thrillers. He notices that Adam Tredwin, Sylvia Tredwin’s son, has also returned to Petheram. As children, the two used to be friends, briefly, before Adam’s father was killed in the 1980s by a hit-and-run driver and Sylvia took him away from the village.

But it’s when George begins to tidy out his father’s loft and slowly begins to learn more details about Sylvia Tredwin’s disappearance that he starts to uncover dark secrets and hidden truths – discoveries that will peel back the decades to reveal a labyrinthine world of madness, jealousies, deceit, lies and murder. He little knows his idle quest to find out the truth behind Sylvia Tredwin’s abduction will have profound and dangerous consequences for all concerned.

Pretty, Hip & Dead (Agnes Barton/Kimberly Steele Cozy Mystery Book 1) - Amazon

Nook Link

Kimberly Steele had barely recovered from her wedding reception the day before, and now, she’s just discovered the body of her husband’s former girlfriend, Clare Barnett, someone whom she had argued with hours ago at a photo shoot for the Pretty and Hip perfume line. It’s no wonder she was the prime suspect, at least in the eyes of Deputy Danworth.

Jeremy Preston wasn’t about to allow his new wife, Kimberly, to be railroaded, although he was upset that Kimberly had pushed Clare into Lake Huron right before Clare’s death, or so Clare said. He hired Agnes Barton, a senior-aged sleuth, from East Tawas, who had a high success rate of crime solving, never expecting that his pregnant wife would begin to traipse around with Agnes and her partner, Eleanor Mason, as they dug into the background of Clare that led all the way to Hollywood.

Agnes and Eleanor were rooming at Mrs. Barry’s house during the case, the same beer-toting senior and mother of Sheriff Clay Barry who not long ago ran for sheriff in East Tawas, much to the chagrin of Agnes and Eleanor. But this time around Mrs. Barry had changed her tune and gave them the use of her car.

Drawing Conclusions: A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery $1.99

Nearly twenty years ago, when a conductor was poisoned and the Questura sent a man to investigate, readers first met Commissario Guido Brunetti. Since 1992’s Death at La Fenice, Donna Leon and her shrewd, sophisticated, and compassionate investigator have been delighting readers around the world. For her millions of fans, Leon’s novels have opened a window into the private Venice of her citizens, a world of incomparable beauty, family intimacy, shocking crime, and insidious corruption. This internationally acclaimed, bestselling series is widely considered one of the best ever written, and Atlantic Monthly Press is thrilled to be publishing the twentieth installment, Drawing Conclusions, this spring.

Late one night, Brunetti is called away from dinner to investigate the death of a widow in her modest apartment. Though there are some signs of a struggle, the medical examiner rules that she died of a heart attack. It seems there is nothing for Brunetti to investigate. But he can’t shake the feeling that something or someone may have triggered her heart attack, that perhaps the woman was threatened. Conversations with the woman’s son, her upstairs neighbor, and the nun in charge of the old-age home where she volunteered, do little to satisfy Brunetti’s nagging curiosity. With the help of Inspector Vianello and the ever-resourceful Signorina Elettra, perhaps Brunetti can get to the truth and find some measure of justice.

Insightful and emotionally powerful, Drawing Conclusions reaffirms Donna Leon’s status as one of the masters of literary crime fiction.

I distinctly remember the unusually hot and muggy day in May when a team of friendly and professional movers took all my worldly possessions and skillfully packed them into an 18-wheeler. I remember thinking: what if I never see this truck again?

That's exactly what happens to Stanley Peke in Jonathan Stone's riveting crime thriller, Moving Day. The premise is elegantly simple: a slick scam where fake movers arrive a day early and steal all your belongings. The execution by Stone is expertly done: I found myself flipping pages faster than a semitruck on a dark, straight highway.

At its core, Moving Day is a cat-and-mouse game between 72-year-old Stanley, who is about to embark on his golden years after a lifetime of hard work, and Nick, a clever con man who thinks through every detail. For Nick, the Peke heist is just the most recent of many. After all, he thinks retirees are easy targets—they collect on their insurance and move on.

Not Stanley. He wants his things back. He has lost everything before, and he doesn't plan to again. Even if it means tracking criminals to a remote barn in Montana with only a rusty spade to clear his way.

Thankfully, the moving truck with my belongings did show up in Seattle a few weeks later, everything intact and accounted for. In Stanley's case, things don't go quite as smoothly: his path is filled with haunting memories and dead bodies, past and present. But after he travels on this harsh and at times poignant journey, it ultimately offers him redemption.

When I last spoke with Christine Kling, she had just sailed to the isle of Majuro in the Marshall Islands, a remote country in the northern Pacific Ocean that is part of Micronesia. We were working on final edits for her new thriller, and dry land offered civilization—and, even more important, Wi-Fi, which allows for an easier round of edits.

Christine's real life living and sailing aboard her 33-foot sailboat often sounds like something straight out of an adventure story—and, in fact, it's where she frequently gets inspiration for her exciting novels, including Dragon's Triangle, a nautical thriller set in the South China Sea. Filled with pirates, naval history, and a blowgun-toting, tattooed assassin from Borneo, Dragon's Triangle is an exotic tale about treasure hunting on tropical islands.

Maggie Riley is settling into her new life in Thailand, having left behind her past and the disappearance of Cole Thatcher: a maritime archeologist, conspiracy nut, and the love of her life. A former Marine, Maggie is enjoying solitude aboard her 40-foot sailboat, but before long, she gets pulled into a net of intrigue that reunites her with Thatcher.

I imagine Maggie sharing a few qualities with her author: a profound desire to explore, intrepid curiosity, and a free and open spirit that spurs her on from one port to the next. Last I checked, Christine was headed to the island republic of Malta to start research for her next book, set in the Mediterranean Sea. I expect that wherever she anchors next, her adventures will soon make their way into her pages.

Marriage can be a real killer.    One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work “draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction.” Gone Girl’s toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn.    On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?    As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?   With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.
