Cold Water Bridegroom
by B. Brumley
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Having grown up in San Francisco, Calder Brumen is drawn to the ocean, and he's spent his life trying to capture the beauty of the Pacific on canvas. Over time, he has become obsessed with painting the image of a dark haired mermaid named Gaire, and Calder struggles to explain his devotion to these portraits to his best friend. When Calder finds sandy footprints leading to the edge of his bed, he suspects that the haunting siren is real.
Pursuing the truth, Calder is dragged into a murderous, underwater plot that could destroy them all. And he must choose – is the possibility of a lifetime with Gaire worth risking death for himself and everyone he loves?
What got you started in writing? What does it mean to you?
What got you started in writing? What does it mean to you?
Like so many, I started writing when I was a kid. I wrote a simple poem when I was six or eight. It rhymed. It was boring, but it was everything I wanted to express to my mom at that moment. I think that time was the first time I remember reading pretty words and badly wanting to write pretty words to organize my insides. In my teens, I wrote several short stories, a novella, and started about fifteen novels. I read constantly.
During my teen years, I would spend weeks in the mountains with my grandmother. She always asked about my stories, asked if I finished them, promised that I would publish someday. And then I got married, had babies… Life happened. She passed away before I could.
I’m in my thirties now. I joined an in-person writing/critique group – The Cisco Writers Club. Late last year, the online group I belong to – The Blazing Indie Collective – banded together to form the Falling in Deep Collection. Cold Water Bridegroom is part of the Falling in Deep Collection, but both of these groups keep writing on my mind… the business side, the creative side, editing, re-writes, all of it.
Last weekend, I returned from The DFW Writers Conference. During the conference, I met Steven James, Charlaine Harris, Kevin J. Anderson, and an amazing soldier named Shilo Harris. I listened to published authors, editors, and agents. But, mostly, I learned all over again just how much I’m in love with the industry.
A Monday ago, Ilana Masad, of The Other Stories, interviewed me. It was my first interview as an author. We talked about writing, and I was apologetic for my inexperience. I’m grateful that she welcomes all new writers, but I wonder sometimes if I’m just an imposter, dressed up in a witty writing t-shirt.
It’s a clichéd saying, but time will tell. Success may or may not be mine, but I love writing. I will always love writing. It’s a part of me. Someday, I might be great. Today, I’m just glad to have gotten to my debut. (:

This is a twisted take on mermaids, their world, deceit, lies and vengeance. The story is a little puzzling at times. It's all over the place. But once you realize what's going on, this is a wonderful story that will transport you to a whole new world. The tale is haunting and romantic with a big twist. You'll lose yourself reading this, as page by page you follow the journey of Calder and Gaire.
